Brief History.

Uk’wimi TradesTraining Institute was established in September 1996 after taking over the Structure left behind by refugees at Ukwimi Resettlement Scheme in Chief Sandwe’s Area which is about 70 KM from Petauke Town. There were six students who started in Bricklaying and Plastering course.

The Institution has since expanded and has two campuses; one at Ukwimi Resettlement Scheme and the other within the centre of Petauke town. The Institute is now offering five courses at Ukwimi Campus namely General Agriculture, Automotive Mechanics, Carpentry and Joinery, Bricklaying and Plastering and Plumbing and Sheet Metal.

While at the town campus courses like Secretarial and Office Management, Social Work, ZICA Technician, Human Resource Management and Computer Studies are being offered. The Institute is the process of introducing more courses at the town campus like General Agriculture, Automotive Mechanics and Bricklaying and Plastering which will run concurrently with those in Ukwimi.

A wide of short intensive tailor made courses are offered on a regular basis.

The Institute is currently working on establishing strong and mutual partnerships with the University of Zambia (Computer Centre) and the Mulungushi University in offering practical ICT programs and some Social Science Programs respectively.

PRODUCTS FROM OUR WORKSHOPS

THE LAWN CLAMP CHAIR (CARPENTRY AND JOINERY)

These are chairs that are easy to carry but very fancy. They can be made from reasonable pieces of wood that are known as off-cuts and of less or no value. These chairs have been made from flanges made from discarded pieces of sheet metal from the plumbing and sheet of metal workshop

The Carnavas material was used for the seat and supported using wood rods as fasteners.

The Lift Pump (PLUMBING AND SHEET METAL)

A pump is a device which raises water (Liquid) from a lower level to a higher level. This is a type of a pump that discharges water (Liquid at its upward stroke only.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

Its action principle of operation entirely depends on the atmospheric pressure which brings about air fluctuation in the barrel casing of the pump, hence creating an action known as SIPHONAGE underneath the suction pipe, which helps the pump to start sucking water from the lower level and pump it to the higher level through the suction pipe which is connected to the non return valve that allows water to flow in one direction only, hence creating that compression pressure in the barrel which facilitates the flow of water out of the pump through the spout.

IMPACT

It can be used wherever there is a source water.

It substitutes the shallow open wells into a safe and covered one.

It enhances sanitation and hygiene in that people can afford to drink clean and safe water

It is cheaper as it can be made of waste materials

It is locally made, making it easily accessible to any ordinary household
